Every Saturday, FOCUS Phoenix sets up an old folding table.
There is nothing particularly remarkable about the table itself. But what fills it—and the fact that it is there week after week—means something to the neighbors who have come to depend on FOCUS Phoenix.
Food. Water. Hygiene supplies. Clothing. Other necessities generously provided by donors.
For someone experiencing homelessness, when nearly everything else in life may be changing from one day to the next, that table represents something they can count on.
It represents a community that will be there.
Fellowship with a Smile
This summer, FOCUS Phoenix has welcomed many new faces—not only volunteers, but new guests coming for a home-cooked meal and fellowship among people who see Christ in them.
For some guests, that fellowship has become an important part of their week.
Debbie, one of our regular guests, recently shared:
“Every Saturday morning, I wake up early, read my Bible, then come straight to the park to fellowship with FOCUS Phoenix. Here, we can feel the love of Jesus and it is the closest to a Church some of us living on the street will ever get enough courage to attend.”
Her words capture why FOCUS Phoenix Saturday Fellowship is about more than distributing food and supplies.
We want every person who joins us to know that they are seen.
FOCUS Phoenix keeps an icon present at each Saturday Fellowship, surrounding the people we serve with the Saints and offering guests an opportunity to experience a small taste of the beauty of the Orthodox Faith.
Sometimes the most meaningful part of a Saturday isn’t something that can be placed into a bag.
It is a warm conversation.
A smile.
Someone sitting beside a guest who is having a difficult morning.
Or simply the experience of being around people who are genuinely happy that you came.
Helping Our Neighbors Beat the Heat
That consistent presence becomes especially important during the Phoenix summer.
The extreme heat is difficult for everyone in the Valley, but especially for our brothers and sisters who are unhoused and living in it 24 hours a day.
FOCUS Phoenix is grateful to partner with Hope Church in the Sunnyslope neighborhood to provide a weekday shower program that also serves as a heat relief center.
Monday through Friday, guests can come inside, take a shower, receive fresh hygiene essentials, charge their devices, escape the heat, and simply exist for a while without the constant fear of judgment.
There are no questions asked.
For someone who has been outside in the Phoenix heat, a shower and a few hours indoors can offer much-needed physical relief.
But the opportunity to enter a place where you are welcomed without judgment can matter just as much.
“You Prepare a Table Before Me”
FOCUS Phoenix is only able to provide these services because donors and volunteers continue to make them possible.
That brings us back to the folding table.
It may not look like much. But every Saturday, what sits on that table is evidence of hundreds of individual acts of generosity.
Someone donated the food.
Someone purchased hygiene supplies.
Someone gave financially so FOCUS could buy what was missing.
Someone packed a car.
Someone arrived early to set everything up.
And then someone stood behind that table ready to welcome the next person who came.
The words of Christ in Matthew 25 are at the heart of that service:
“For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me.”
If you have ever wondered how much a donation matters, imagine if that folding table was one of the only things you knew you could count on being there every Saturday while everything else in your life was changing.
The People Who Make It Possible
Behind that consistency are people who quietly serve.
One of them is longtime FOCUS Phoenix supporter Paul Valonis.
Paul, Head of Facility Maintenance at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and his brother Demritius have supported the work of the Cathedral and FOCUS Phoenix in countless ways. Paul provided the FOCUS banner that hangs outside the Center Director’s office and recently took it upon himself to create personal emergency medical kits for guests.
There was no expectation that he do it.
He simply saw a way he could help and did it.
People like Paul and Demritius—and the many donors, parishioners, volunteers, and partners who serve alongside them—allow FOCUS Phoenix to continue providing the loving care that has become central to the ministry.
Something You Can Count On
For our guests, life can change quickly.
Housing can disappear.
Temperatures can climb dangerously high.
A phone can lose its charge.
A clean shower can become difficult to find.
Even knowing where the next meal will come from can be uncertain.
FOCUS Phoenix cannot remove all of that uncertainty.
But we can continue to show up.
We can offer a meal and a cold drink.
We can provide a shower and a place to escape the heat.
We can sit beside someone who is having a difficult morning.
We can have a conversation.
We can pray.
And every Saturday, we can set up that old folding table again.
Because sometimes making Christ’s love visible begins with something very simple:
Being there when someone is counting on you.
