Scholarship Criteria
The Scholarship Committee decides and awards scholarship money to college students who are descendants or relatives Ukrainian American Veterans.
Students are required to write an essay (400-500 words, double spaced) about a current military or popular topic. Students must choose any one of the following topics to write their essay:
- war on terrorism
- human rights
- negative effects of wars on American veterans
- Russian aggression on sovereign countries
- Ukrainian-American veteran contributions to America’s wars
To be eligible for a UAV scholarship, applicants must be descendants or related to Ukrainian American Veterans and be a full-time matriculated college student in a degree program. Additionally, students from accredited trade schools or institutions that have degree programs are eligible as well. Students can apply while in their senior year of high school, college attendance will be verified before the awards are given in the fall semester. Applications are accepted all-year-round and the deadline for each year is on the last day of August. Moreover, undergraduate students may reapply for scholarship awards.

The Ukrainian American Veterans sincerely thank all those individuals and organizations who donate to the scholarship fund. Without your generous support this program would not be possible. A special acknowledgment and appreciation is extended to the UAV National Ladies Auxiliary and Ukrainian American Club of Palm Beaches for their never ending support of the UAV Scholarship Fund. Businesses/corporations, community organizations and individuals wanting to make a tax-exempt donation should make their check payable to UAV Scholarship Fund. You may also make a secure, online donation via PayPal. Those who contribute $100 or more will be recognized or have an award given in their name.
UAV SCHOLARSHIP OPERATING PROCEDURES

MISSION STATEMENT OF THE UAV NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND:
To award deserving full-time undergraduate college students scholarship money to help pay for books or school supplies.
DUTIES OF THE SCHOARSHIP COMMITTEE:
- The Scholarship Committee consists of a National Scholarship Officer and four committee members.
- Finances – maintain bank accounts in a CD, savings, and checking.
- The Scholarship Committee is responsible for preparing the mailings that are sent to all UAV members each year.
- The Scholarship Committee is responsible for reading applications and essays then selecting the recipients who will receive the monetary awards and deciding how much.
STUDENT PROCEDURES:
- An application is available at the bottom of this page.
- Fill out the application.
- Submit an article (400-500 words) on an assigned current military topic.
- Email a small digital picture of yourself and a regular picture (2” by 2”) in the mail.
- The deadline to submit an application is August 31st of each year.
- Students may submit an application all year round.
- Student can apply in their senior year of high school. College attendance will be verified in the Fall semester.
- Eligibility: Undergraduate college students who are descendants or related to Ukrainian American Veterans.
- Applicants must be full-time matriculated students in a degree program. Students from accredited trade schools or institutions (mechanical or cooking school) are also eligible.
- Students may apply up to four times in their college career.
UAV SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE PROCEDURES:
Here are the main criteria that need to be considered when deciding how much to award the recipients.
- The reading of the essays.
- Consider extracurricular activities such as sports participation, community service, and participation in Ukrainian organizations.
- Give at least one award for $500, if possible.
- Student applicant verification includes attendance at college in the Fall semester, transcript, speak to parents at home address to verify attendance, and veteran connection before sending congratulatory letter and check. Congratulatory letter and check will be sent after the National Convention.
- Write an article about the scholarship recipients and send pictures to The Ukrainian Weekly for publication.
- Try to advertise or write an article about UAV scholarship awards in local newspapers.
- Try to identify and contact potential donors for the scholarship fund.
- Those who contribute at least $100 or more can have an award given or mentioned in their name.
- Awards may be designated for a specific area of the country such as in the case of the “Ukrainian American Club of Palm Beaches” to a Florida student.
- UAV member descendants or relatives applying may be more favorably considered.
- Send-out a prepared letter to all UAV members for scholarship fund donations.
- Prepare quarterly reports of the scholarship fund for the Executive Board meetings and annual report at the National Convention.
- Mail a receipt to donors of the scholarship fund.
After weighing the listed criteria and any other influencing factor(s), the scholarship committee will make the final decision about awards.
