KITCHENER, ON — On August 21–22, 2026, His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel of Detroit and of The Romanian Orthodox Episcopate and His Grace Bishop Andrei of Cleveland were present at St. John the Baptist Romanian Orthodox Church in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, for the funeral service of the newly departed Very Reverend Protopresbyter Dumitru Ichim.

On Friday evening, August 21, His Grace Bishop Andrei officiated the Wake Service (Priveghi), assisted by priests and deacons from the surrounding area. Clergy, family members, spiritual children, and faithful gathered in prayer to pay their final respects to Father Dumitru and to give thanks to God for his many decades of priestly, theological, literary, and cultural service.

On Saturday, August 22, His Grace officiated the Holy and Divine Liturgy. Assisting His Grace were the V. Rev. Ionut Tudor Maerean, parish priest of St. John the Baptist Church and Dean of the Central Canada Deanery, together with a number of priests and deacons from the area.

At the conclusion of the Holy and Divine Liturgy, the Funeral Service was celebrated in the presence of His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel. The gathered hierarchs, clergy, family members, and faithful offered their final prayers for the repose of Father Dumitru’s soul and entrusted him to the mercy and love of the risen Christ.

Father Dumitru served the Romanian Orthodox community in Kitchener for more than three and a half decades. After becoming parish priest of St. John the Baptist Romanian Orthodox Church in 1978, he guided the development of the parish, the establishment of the Romanian Cultural Centre, and the construction of the present church, consecrated on August 14, 1994. Following his retirement in 2014, he remained attached to the parish and continued to participate actively in the spiritual and cultural life of the Romanian community.

A distinguished theologian, poet, writer, and editor, Father Dumitru leaves behind a rich spiritual and cultural legacy. Through his priestly ministry and writings, he brought together Orthodox theology, Romanian spirituality, poetry, and the experience of the Romanian community in North America.

The Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America once again extends its heartfelt condolences to Father Dumitru’s family, spiritual children, and the clergy and faithful of St. John the Baptist Romanian Orthodox Church.

May Christ our God, Who is the Resurrection and the Life, grant rest to the soul of His newly departed servant, the Very Reverend Protopresbyter Dumitru, in the dwelling place of the righteous.

KITCHENER, ON — În zilele de 21–22 august 2026, Înaltpreasfințitul Părinte Arhiepiscop Nathaniel de Detroit și al Episcopiei ortodoxe Române din America, alături de Preasfințitul Părinte Episcop Andrei de Cleveland au fost prezenți la Biserica Ortodoxă Română „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul” din Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, pentru slujba înmormântării nou-adormitului PC. Pr. Protopresbiter Dumitru Ichim.

Vineri seara, 21 august, Preasfințitul Părinte Episcop Andrei a săvârșit slujba Priveghiului, alături de preoți și diaconi din împrejurimi. Clerici, membrii familiei, fiii duhovnicești și credincioșii s-au adunat în rugăciune pentru a-i aduce Părintelui Dumitru un ultim omagiu și pentru a-I mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru îndelungata sa slujire în Biserica lui Hristos.

Sâmbătă, 22 august, Preasfințitul Părinte Episcop Andrei a săvârșit Sfânta și Dumnezeiasca Liturghie. Alături de Preasfinția Sa au slujit PC. Pr. Ionut Tudor Maerean, preotul paroh al Bisericii „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul” și protopop al Protopopiatului Canadei Centrale, împreună cu mai mulți preoți și diaconi din zonă.

La încheierea Sfintei și Dumnezeieștii Liturghii a fost săvârșită slujba Înmormântării, în prezența Înaltpreasfințitului Părinte Arhiepiscop Nathaniel. Ierarhii, clericii, membrii familiei și credincioșii prezenți au înălțat rugăciuni pentru odihna sufletului Părintelui Dumitru, încredințându-l milei și iubirii lui Hristos Cel înviat.

Părintele Dumitru a slujit comunitatea ortodoxă românească din Kitchener timp de peste trei decenii și jumătate. După ce a devenit preot paroh al Bisericii Ortodoxe Române „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul” în anul 1978, a îndrumat dezvoltarea parohiei, înființarea Centrului Cultural Românesc și construirea actualei biserici, târnosită la 14 august 1994. După retragerea sa din slujirea ca preot paroh, în anul 2014, a rămas atașat parohiei și a continuat să participe activ la viața spirituală și culturală a comunității românești.

Distins teolog, poet, scriitor și editor, Părintele Dumitru lasă în urmă o bogată moștenire spirituală și culturală. Prin slujirea sa preoțească și prin scrierile sale, a unit teologia ortodoxă, spiritualitatea românească, poezia și experiența comunității românești din America de Nord.

Episcopia Ortodoxă Română din America transmite din nou sincere condoleanțe familiei Părintelui Dumitru, fiilor săi duhovnicești, precum și clerului și credincioșilor Bisericii Ortodoxe Române „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul”.

Hristos, Dumnezeul nostru, Cel ce este Învierea și Viața, să odihnească sufletul nou-adormitului Său slujitor, PC. Pr. Protopresbiter Dumitru, în locașurile drepților.
