It is with sorrow, yet with every hope in the Resurrection of our Lord, that we announce the falling asleep in the Lord of the ever-memorable Elder Joseph, Abbot and founder of the Holy Monastery of Saint Nektarios in New York, a spiritual child of the ever-memorable and saintly Elder Ephraim of Arizona.
The Elder fell asleep peacefully this morning, April 17, at approximately 6:30 a.m. at the Monastery, surrounded by his spiritual children and the monastic brotherhood.
Upon receiving the sorrowful news, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America offered a Trisagion Service in the Archdiocesan Chapel of the Holy Apostle Paul, praying for the repose of the soul of Elder Joseph. Following the service, His Eminence spoke of the personality and spiritual gifts of the Elder, especially highlighting his ministry in the Sacrament of Confession. The repose of the Elder brings sorrow to the fullness of the Sacred Archdiocese. It is noted that the Archbishop had visited the ailing Elder on numerous occasions, most recently on the evening of Great and Holy Saturday, and was kept continually informed of his health.
It has been decided that:
a) The Funeral Service will be held at the Katholikon of the Monastery of Saint Nektarios in Roscoe, New York, on Monday, April 20, 2026, at 10:30 a.m.
b) Earlier that same day, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America will celebrate the Divine Liturgy for the repose of the soul of the ever-memorable Elder.
c) The interment will take place in the cemetery of the Monastery.
