Dr. Grammenos Karanos, Assistant Professor of Byzantine Liturgical Music at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, hosts the first in a series of podcasts produced by the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture and collectively titled “In Byzantium.” In this podcast, Professor Karanos discusses the origins, development, and defining characteristics of Byzantine chant. Listeners can hear magnificent examples of chant in different modes and tones recorded by some of the great masters of the “psaltic art,” as well as by HCHC’s own St. Romanos the Melodist Byzantine Choir.
