The Diaconate Program, now in its tenth year, brought 13 individuals from 11 states to the HCHC campus from July 16-24 for its summer session. The program is an educational and formational initiative of the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, designed to prepare candidates for service to the Church as deacons. This year two laypeople also participated as part of a new continuing education program called “Training Laborers for the Lord.”
Dn. Vasilios Smith, who completed the Diaconate Program in 2010, served as the liturgical mentor to the group, assisted by several deacons from the Boston Metropolis in the teaching of teleturgics (liturgical practice). Holy Cross faculty, including Dean James Skedros, ThD, offered instruction in Orthodox history, Scripture in the Orthodox Church, the Orthodox liturgical cycle, and the musical aspects of serving as a deacon.
