St. Romanos the Melodist Byzantine Choir of Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (HCHC) will be featured at a special service of Great Vespers at St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church in Orange, Connecticut on Saturday, April 1.
“St. Romanos the Melodist Byzantine Choir is one of the long-standing treasures of Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology,” said Rev. Fr. Christopher T. Metropulos, MDiv, HCHC President. “Uplifting their voices to God, the St. Romanos the Melodist Byzantine Choir truly inspires a higher level of spirituality in those who hear their voices. It is my hope that Orthodox Christians of all denominations and those of other faiths will attend this very special liturgical event.”
The evening is co-sponsored by Yale University’s Institute of Sacred Music. Dr. Grammenos Karanos, PhD, HCHC Assistant Professor of Byzantine Liturgical Music, will offer introductory remarks at 5:30 pm, followed immediately by the Vespers service. All are invited to attend.
“I gratefully acknowledge Professor Martin Jean of the Institute of Sacred Music and Professor Peter Jeffery, Chair of the Medieval Studies Department at the University of Notre Dame and St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church for their kind invitation to participate in this event,” said Dr. Karanos. “It is a testament to the growing scholarly interest and broad appeal of the Psaltic Art, HCHC, and the Orthodox Christian Church.”
A question-and-answer period and light reception will follow the service.
“My continued thanks to Rev. Fr. Peter J. Orfanakos, MDiv, HCHC Board of Trustees member and pastor of St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church, for his forward vision and willingness to host this event, and continued unwavering support of our Orthodox Christian college and seminary” continued Rev. Fr. Christopher.
