On Sunday May 3, 2026 the Greek Orthodox communities of Detroit, shepherded by His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit, gathered in the historic “Greek Town” neighborhood to celebrate the 24th Annual Greek Independence Day Parade.

The day’s events began at the Annunciation Cathedral with the Divine Liturgy and special Doxology Service, which commemorates Greece’s War of Independence in 1821 honors those who fought and died for the supreme cause of liberty and sovereignty. A pre-parade event hosted by the Pan-Cretan Organization “Pseloretes” of Detroit was held at the Atheneum Hotel.
The Detroit Parade was attended by His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas, along with Consul General of Greece in Chicago Mr. Emmanuel Koubarakis and Greek Consul in Chicago Mrs. Georgia Tasiopoulou, Grand Marshall Artemis Leontis, Parade Committee President Yanni Dionisopoulos, Master of Ceremonies Achilles Papakonstaniou, and Detroit City Council Member at Large Mary Waters, among others.

The 2026 procession – honoring Greek, Cypriot, Pontian, and Greek-American culture and history – included over 40 different groups: Greek Orthodox Churches, para-Church Organizations, Greek-American Associations, dance troupes, Detroit Civic Authorities and Police, the Detroit Piston’s Drum Line, and several honored guests driven in Detroit’s very own Henry Ford Model T’s.
