At its meeting on February 24, 2026, the Board of Trustees of Hellenic College Holy Cross (HCHC) received an announcement from President and Professor of Theology, Dr. Demetrios S. Katos, regarding his leadership of the institution.

Dr. Katos informed the Board that earlier this month he shared with His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America his intention to step aside as President, effective March 1, 2026. He will take a sabbatical and return to teaching in the new academic year, beginning in the spring semester.

“This is the right time for me and for the school,” said Dr. Katos. “It has truly been an honor to serve as President of Hellenic College Holy Cross. I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me and for all that we have accomplished together. We have momentum like never before. I am grateful for our faculty, staff, students, trustees, donors, and friends who made this progress possible.

Looking ahead, Dr. Katos emphasized the expanded mission of HCHC: “HCHC has always been vital to the life of our Church. Its Five-Year Plan will go further and make it a catalyst for spiritual growth across the Archdiocese and beyond. We must pray fervently and work tirelessly in pursuit of this vision.”

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America expressed appreciation for Dr. Katos’ leadership: “Demetrios’ leadership was catalytic at a pivotal time. He strengthened Board formation, recruited committed Trustees, improved the institution’s finances, positioned the institution for a landmark land transaction, and facilitated a multi-year strategic plan — all with diligence and integrity. We are grateful for his leadership in bringing HCHC to this point of renewed stability and momentum.”

The Board of Trustees expressed gratitude for Dr. Katos’ dedicated service and affirmed its commitment to advancing the mission of Hellenic College Holy Cross in the years ahead.

Additionally, the Board of Trustees voted to appoint the Reverend Protopresbyter Michael Lambakis as Interim President. Fr. Lambakis graduated from Hellenic College in 2003 and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in 2006. He served the Annunciation Cathedral in Houston, TX, for almost 20 years as its Dean. He is currently serving as the Dean of Students. He is married to Presbytera Renee Constantinou, and together they have two adult children who are studying at the School (Andrew – Holy Cross; Nicholas – Hellenic College).

The Board has established a Presidential Search Committee, co-chaired by Trustees George C. Demos and Dr. Christene Zeppos, to conduct a comprehensive national search. Members include two additional trustees, along with one faculty representative from each school, selected by their respective faculties.

The Committee will work diligently and prayerfully to identify the next President who will build upon HCHC’s renewed strength and advance its mission in the years ahead.
