The Greek Orthodox Basketball League of the Archdiocesan District of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America recently experienced two meaningful moments that highlighted the faith, unity, and lasting legacy that shape our community.
On November 15, 2025, during a G3 Division game in Flushing, NY between St. Nicholas Church and St. Demetrios Church Merrick, the GOBL family was blessed with a visit from His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America. Before tip-off, His Eminence spent time speaking with the young athletes, offering warm and heartfelt words of encouragement that reflected his deep love and compassion for our youth. Both teams then gathered at half court to recite the Lord’s Prayer in Greek—a moment of reverence and unity that visibly moved His Eminence and reminded all present of the faith and tradition that bind our community together. It was truly an unforgettable experience for our athletes and a great honor for the league.
Also, on November 15, 2025 the GOBL held the Second Annual Nicholas Kokinakis Memorial in Astoria. This gathering honored a man whose life and legacy continue to uplift and inspire all who knew him. The service, beautifully officiated by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos, offered comfort and reflection to those in attendance. The memorial also celebrated Nick Kokinakis’ remarkable vision and leadership—particularly his dedication to creating meaningful opportunities for children through both the basketball league for ages 7–12 and the JOY soccer league. His passion for giving young people a place to grow, play, and belong lives on powerfully through these programs.
As players, coaches, families, and friends united in sportsmanship, faith, and remembrance, the spirit of community was felt deeply. GOBL extended heartfelt thanks to everyone joined, helping make these moments truly special for the GOBL family.
May the memory of Nicholas Kokinakis be eternal. Αιωνία του η μνήμη.
