Rev. Protopresbyter Dr. Peter J. Spiro, Chief Chaplain of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Director of the FREEDOM Ministry of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, and founder of the ARISTEVI Foundation, visited St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Aurora, Illinois, where he led a parish-wide engagement focused on raising awareness of human trafficking and supporting survivors.
Fr. Peter celebrated the Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning and delivered the homily, calling the faithful to recognize the inherent dignity of every human person and to respond to the suffering of the most vulnerable with vigilance, compassion, and action. Drawing from the Gospel, he emphasized the Church’s responsibility to serve the least of the brethren and to remain attentive to the hidden realities of exploitation present even within local communities.
Following the Divine Liturgy, the parish hosted a luncheon attended by over 250 people, during which Fr. Peter presented on the mission and growing impact of the FREEDOM Ministry. His presentation addressed the scope and complexity of human trafficking, including both sex and labor exploitation, and highlighted emerging trends such as online grooming and coercion. He also offered practical guidance for clergy and parishioners on identifying vulnerabilities, fostering safe environments, and engaging in meaningful prevention and response efforts.
During the luncheon, Fr. Peter shared multiple accounts of survivors who have been impacted through his ministry, offering a powerful and personal perspective on both the realities of exploitation and the path toward healing and restoration.
Fr. Peter further shared the work of the ARISTEVI Foundation, which provides comprehensive, trauma informed support to survivors of human trafficking, including educational and vocational assistance, therapeutic services, and spiritual care. He underscored the importance of coordinated efforts between the Church, law enforcement, and community organizations in addressing this growing crisis.
The visit to St. Athanasios Church reflects the continued expansion of the FREEDOM Ministry’s national outreach, equipping parishes with the tools and awareness necessary to confront human trafficking and care for those impacted by it.
