Tanweer and Fathom Entertainment announced that Kapodistrias (The Governor) will be shown in theaters across the United States for a one-night-only event on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
The film is based on true events and is the fifth-highest-grossing Greek film of all time. Directed and produced by Yannis Smaragdis, the historical drama follows the life of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the diplomat and statesman who became the first Governor of Greece after the War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire.
The film centers on his role in the early formation of the Greek state, including efforts to unify the country and establish its first institutions. The April 22 U.S. screening will also include bonus content featuring reactions following a private screening, with appearances by Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens, director Yannis Smaragdis, and others.
The film opened in Greece on Christmas Day 2025 and that a premiere event was held at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, New York. Those in attendance included Greece’s Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, director Yannis Smaragdis, actress Natalia Kapodistria, composer Minos Matsas, and members of the Greek American arts and cultural community. Tickets for the April 22 screening are scheduled to become available online and at participating theater box offices on March 20, with theater locations subject to change. Additional information and ticket notifications are available through Fathom Entertainment.
