Saint Tikhon’s Monastery and Seminary will be the site of the sixth annual Florovsky Symposium February 24-25, 2017. Hieromonk Nikolai [Sakharov] of the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist, Essex, England, will be the keynote speaker.
The symposium is an annual tradition initiated by a scholarly society at Princeton University that attracts scholars, clergy, and laity from around the world who are interested in combining serious scholarly inquiry with faithfulness to the Tradition of the Church.
This year’s gathering, “Steppingstone to Contemplation: Asceticism and Theology in Scripture and Tradition,” takes its theme from Saint Gregory the Theologian, who writes in Oration 20, “Do you wish to become a theologian some day, and worthy of the divinity? Keep the commandments; walk on the path of the precepts. For practical virtue is the steppingstone to contemplation. Labor to cultivate your soul by means of the body.”
Other featured speakers will include Dr. Mary Ford, Saint Tikhon’s Seminary; Brian Dunkle, S.J., Boston College; and Nicholas Marinides, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, Brookline, MA.
The symposium will begin on the evening of Friday, February 24 and conclude in the late afternoon on Saturday, February 25. The program features lectures, discussions, prayer, and time for fellowship. Advanced registration is required. The $30.00 registration fee includes refreshments, continental breakfast, lunch, and program tuition.
