Today, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America marked OXI Day with a message issued via social media:
Let us take from today’s anniversary two precious legacies: From the heroes of 1940, freedom as responsibility and sacrifice. And from Christ our Lord, freedom as truth, love, and communion. May the memory of all who fought and gave their lives for the freedom of our homeland be eternal. And may we be found worthy to hand down to the generations to come not only the memory of the heroes of 1940, its flame unquenched, but also the precious heritage of their ideals, whole and untarnished: the principles and values that inspired their struggle, steeled their resolve, and were sealed by their supreme sacrifice on the altar of freedom. May God bless Greece, Cyprus, our Hellenic diaspora, and the United States of America.
Long live the 28th of October!Ας κρατήσουμε από τη σημερινή επέτειο δύο πολύτιμες παρακαταθήκες: Από τους ήρωες του 1940, την ελευθερία ως ευθύνη και θυσία.
