Delegates to the Clergy-Laity Congress gathered for the workshop “Best Teaching Strategies: A Framework for Orthodox Catechists,” which focused on strengthening parish education through engaging teaching methods and practical classroom resources. The workshop highlighted how innovation and intentional planning can help teachers create meaningful learning experiences that inspire students and deepen their understanding of the Orthodox faith.
The program featured two distinct presentations that addressed common challenges faced by Sunday School teachers and offered actionable solutions for classrooms of all sizes and age groups.
The first presenter, Dr. Thomas Copulos shared ways that technology can become a valuable tool in faith-based instruction. Drawing from his experience, he demonstrated how visual presentations, videos, and online materials can enrich lessons and capture students’ attention. Rather than replacing traditional teaching methods, these tools can help bring Orthodox teachings to life while meeting young learners where they are.
The workshop also introduced participants to a range of accessible online resources that can assist educators in planning lessons, adapting content, and creating engaging learning environments. Teachers explored how technology can serve different learning styles while remaining rooted in the values and traditions of the Church.
The second presentation, offered by Natalie Tzobanakis, founder of Orthodox Pebbles, focused on the fundamentals of effective lesson design, Tzobanakis gave a framework for developing lessons with engaging activities. Participants learned how to build lessons around specific learning outcomes and incorporate interactive activities that encourage spiritual growth.
Together, the two presentations underscored a shared message: effective religious education requires both preparation and a willingness to use today’s tools to reach today’s learners. Attendees left with new ideas, practical resources, and renewed confidence in their role in the Church.
