The Very Rev. Dr. John Chryssavgis, Archdeacon of the Ecumenical Throne and a leading Orthodox theologian, educator, and environmental advocate, has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the General Division of the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List.

The official citation honors Fr. John “for significant service to the Orthodox Christian Church, to education, and to advancing ecological awareness.” The Australian Government’s official media notes identify him as a theological advisor to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on environmental issues since 2002, Archdeacon of the Ecumenical Throne since 2012, and advisor and theologian to the Ecumenical Office of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America since 2002.

The 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List was announced by Her Excellency the Honourable Ms. Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and Chancellor of the Order of Australia. In the General Division of the Order of Australia, the list included 183 appointments at the level of Member — the distinction awarded to Fr. John.

For Fr. John, the award recognizes a ministry that has connected Orthodox theology with education, ecumenical engagement, and the Church’s witness on care for creation. Born in Sydney, Australia, he studied theology at the University of Athens and completed doctoral studies at the University of Oxford under Metropolitan Kallistos Ware. He co-founded St. Andrew’s Theological College in Sydney and has taught at the University of Sydney and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology.

In 2023, Fr. John was appointed the first Executive Director of the Huffington Ecumenical Institute at Hellenic College Holy Cross in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he also serves as Professor of Theology. The Institute, established through generous gifts from Michael Huffington and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, fosters dialogue among Christian confessions and academic disciplines in response to contemporary challenges.

Fr. John is widely known for his work alongside His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, whose environmental leadership has become a defining feature of the contemporary witness of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Since 2002, Fr. Chryssavgis has served as theological advisor to the Ecumenical Patriarch on environmental issues, helping articulate the spiritual and theological foundations of ecological responsibility. He was instrumental in nominating His All-Holiness for the 2025 Templeton Prize.

His scholarship includes numerous books and articles on theology, patristics, spirituality, ecology, and the Orthodox Church, with publications translated into several languages. His recent works include Creation as Sacrament: Reflections on Ecology and Spirituality and The Letters of Barsanuphius and John: Desert Wisdom for Everyday Life.

Among Fr. John’s most significant contributions to contemporary Orthodox thought was his role in For the Life of the World: Toward a Social Ethos of the Orthodox Church, the landmark social-ethics document of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Appointed by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Fr. Chryssavgis chaired the Special Commission that prepared the text and later co-edited its Holy Cross Orthodox Press edition with theologian David Bentley Hart. Published in 2020 with the blessing of His All-Holiness and endorsement of the Sacred Synod, the document offers an Orthodox response to the moral and social questions of contemporary life, including poverty, racism, human rights, bioethics, technology, war, refugees, and climate change. It has since become a major point of reference in Orthodox theology, ecumenical dialogue, academic scholarship, and public witness.

The Order of Australia, established in 1975, is the nation’s principal honors system, recognizing Australians whose service and achievements contribute to the country and the wider world. The level of Member of the Order of Australia, or AM, is awarded for service in a particular locality, field of activity, or to a particular group. Nominations are reviewed by the Honours and Awards Secretariat.

The appointment of Fr. John as a Member of the Order of Australia marks a public recognition not only of his personal scholarship and service, but also of the Orthodox Church’s and our Archdiocese’s contribution to theological education, ecumenical relations, and the moral urgency of ecological responsibility.
