Faith, Dialogue, and Tradition: The First Edition of Orthodox Youth Day in Toronto

June 6 of this year marked the date of the first gathering of Orthodox youth from Toronto and the surrounding area—a long-awaited event, the realization of a desire expressed many times in recent years by both the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America and Canada, and the Romanian Orthodox clergy in the aforementioned area.

Titled “Youth Day at the Cathedral,” the event organized with the Blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel, and hosted by St. George Romanian Orthodox Cathedral in Toronto, began, as is befitting, with the Divine Liturgy, followed by a festive meal in the “Dacia” cultural hall of this place of worship (at the end of which the participants—young people between the ages of 16 and 30—had the opportunity to get to know one another better through specially-created icebreaker games) and a dialogue with those present, led by His Grace Bishop Andrei, Bishop of Cleveland and Vicar Bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of America. Held in an atmosphere that was both relaxed and reverent, the dialogue allowed the young people to ask questions about issues specific to the present day; the answers they received—offered with sincerity, gentleness, and at times humor —brought a new, encouraging perspective on how to live in modern society, often marked by hedonism, superficiality, and individualism, and offered further reasons to reflect on true values.

Also noteworthy was the initiative of His Grace Bishop Andrei, who explained the significance of each part of the Divine Liturgy, thereby facilitating a deeper knowledge or, as the case may be, a deeper understanding of the sacred rituals performed in the sanctuary. Thus, the solemnity of the Orthodox service and the natural feelings of veneration, peace, and inner joy experienced throughout it were complemented by a new, educational dimension that deepened the spiritual perspective of those present.

The event brought together over 70 young people, most of them Orthodox, but also members of other denominations, belonging to various ethnic communities, and concluded with a second communal evening meal, followed by several hours spent in the company of music and dance, during which the young people often joined hands in traditional Romanian folk dances.

In closing, we must also acknowledge the efforts of the organizers, who, in the weeks leading up to the event, worked tirelessly to plan and promote it, and on the day of the event, spared no effort to ensure its smooth execution.

The success of this day—memorable in every way—led everyone present to express both a desire for it to become an annual event and for similar events to be organized in the near future. Credinţă, dialog şi tradiţie: Prima ediţie a Zilei Tineretului Ortodox din Toronto

Ziua de 6 iunie a acestui an a marcat data la care a avut loc prima întâlnire a tineretului ortodox din Toronto şi împrejurimi – un eveniment mult aşteptat, concretizare a unei dorinţe exprimate de numeroase ori în anii din urmă atât de către Episcopia Ortodoxă Română din America și Canada, cât şi de către clerul ortodox român din aria mai înainte menţionată.

Intitulat “Ziua Tineretului la Catedrală”, evenimentul organizat cu Binecuvântarea Înaltpreasfințitului Părinte Arhiepiscop Nathaniel, și găzduit de Catedrala Ortodoxă Română „Sfântul Gheorghe” din Toronto), a debutat, aşa cum se cuvine, cu Sfânta Liturghie, urmată de un prânz festiv,  în sala culturală “Dacia” a acestui lăcaş religios (la sfârşitul căreia participanţii – tineri între 16 şi 30 de ani – au avut prilejul de a se cunoaşte mai bine prin intermediul unor jocuri de societate special create în acest scop) şi de un dialog cu cei prezenţi, susţinut de Preasfinţitul Părinte Episcop Andrei, Episcop de Cleveland şi Episcop-Vicar al Episcopiei Ortodoxe Române din America și Canada. Desfăşurat într-o atmosferă deopotrivă relaxată şi reverenţioasă, dialogul a permis tinerilor să adreseze întrebări legate de problemele specifice prezentului, răspunsurile primite – oferite cu sinceritate, blândeţe şi uneori umor – aducând o perspectivă nouă, încurajatoare, legată de modalitatea de a trăi în societatea modernă, adesea marcată de hedonism, superficialitate şi individualism, şi oferind motive suplimentare de reflecţie asupra adevăratelor valori.

De remarcat a fost și inițiativa Preasfinţitului Părinte Episcop Andrei, care a explicat semnificaţia fiecărei etape a Sfintei Liturghii, înlesnind astfel cunoaşterea sau, după caz, înţelegerea mai profundă a ritualurilor tainice săvârşite în altar. Astfel, solemnităţii slujbei ortodoxe şi sentimentelor fireşti de veneraţie, pace şi bucurie interioară, trăite pe parcursul acesteia, li s-a adăugat o dimensiune nouă, educativă, ce a adâncit perspectiva spirituală a celor prezenţi.

Evenimentul a reuşit să strângă laolaltă peste 70 de tineri, majoritatea ortodocşi, dar şi membri ai altor confesiuni, aparţinând mai multor comunităţi etnice, şi s-a încheiat cu o a două masă comunală, de seară, urmată de câteva ceasuri petrecute în compania muzicii şi a dansului, pe parcusul cărora nu arareori tinerii şi-au prins mâinile în tradiţionalele hore româneşti.

În încheiere, trebuie amintit şi efortul organizatorilor, care, în săptămânile premergătoare evenimentului, au muncit neobosit pentru a-l planifica şi promova, iar în ziua acestuia, nu şi-au îngăduit nici un răgaz pentru a asigura desfăşurarea sa în bună regulă.

Succesul acestei zile – memorabilă în toate aspectele sale – a făcut ca toţi cei prezenţi să îşi exprime atât dorinţa ca ea să devină un eveniment anual, cât şi ca alte evenimente similare să fie organizate într-un viitor apropiat.
