A lifetime of memory, music, and cultural tradition have been compiled in a book by Frixos Vozos celebrating the art of mandinades, the poetic couplets deeply rooted in a few Greek islands, especially Karpathos.
This is a collection of his own poems (mandinades), in Greek, spanning 50 years of milestones in his life. With the dedication and organization of his wife Fannie, the book reflects Frixos’ enduring passion for preserving his heritage and sharing it with future generations. “This book is something I’m leaving behind,” he said. “For my children, my grandchildren—for my family to remember where we come from and what we value – our Greek heritage and our love of Karpathos.”
Inspired by childhood memories of village gatherings when he sat tightly next to his father as a young boy, Frixos was fascinated by the singers’ ability construct their mandinades, on the spot. The verses were sung back and forth in a lively exchange of wit, emotion, and storytelling. He especially enjoyed the “ortza,” when the music and the clapping would lift the crowd and bring a mutual joy to all those in the room. Soon, Frixos began composing his own mandinades, ultimately creating a personal archive that spans decades. Mandinades, traditionally composed as rhyming couplets with strict syllabic structure, express a wide range of human experience—from love and celebration to nostalgia and loss. The author’s work reflects this depth, blending personal reflection with cultural tradition.
The project was a collaborative effort, requiring extensive organization and refinement. Original writings, once scattered across notebooks and envelopes, were carefully collected, edited, and translated into a cohesive volume. The book includes contributions from family members, friends and community figures who assisted with language and historical accuracy.
In addition to the written collection, the book has inspired new artistic expression. A featured piece from the collection was recently set to music by composer George Liristis, bringing the poetry to life in a powerful new way that will be shared with the audience.
The official book presentation will take place on March 29, 2026 at 3 pm at St. Demetrios Community Hall in Union, NJ and will feature:
- Live readings of selected mandinades
- A special musical performance
- Remarks from the author
- Traditional pastries, snacks and refreshments
The event is free and open to the public. A portion of the book sales will be donated to the Greek School of St. Demetrios Church.
Attendees will have the opportunity to experience not only the book itself, but the living tradition it represents.
At its core, the collection is more than a literary work—it is a tribute to family, heritage, and the enduring spirit of Karpathian culture.
