At the invitation of Rev. Dr. Nicholas Verdaris and the parish community of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Little Rock, Arkansas, Rev. Dr. Peter J. Spiro visited the parish to address human trafficking awareness and survivor outreach during a special parish luncheon.
Fr. Peter outlined the urgent realities of human trafficking across the United States and presented a comprehensive, faith-based response model that equips parishes to recognize warning signs, support vulnerable individuals, and engage meaningfully in prevention efforts. The presentation emphasized both education and action, calling communities to move beyond awareness into tangible support for survivors.
In addition to the parish luncheon, Fr. Peter met with the parish’s Philoptochos Society, where he provided updates on the coordinated outreach efforts being carried out through St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, the ARISTEVI Foundation, and the FREEDOM National Ministry. These initiatives integrate spiritual care, trauma informed support, educational training, and strategic partnerships to address trafficking at both local and national levels.
With pastoral sensitivity, Fr. Peter shared survivor stories with the Philoptochos that highlighted the profound spiritual and physical wounds caused by trafficking, as well as the life-restoring impact of consistent Church engagement. Parishioners were given insight into practical response strategies and encouraged to consider how their own parish ministries, including Philoptochos, can play a vital role in outreach and advocacy.
The visit reflects the growing commitment of parishes throughout the Greek Orthodox Church to address human trafficking directly and decisively. Through parish education, national coordination, and direct survivor care, the Church continues to strengthen its response, ensuring that those who have suffered exploitation are met with faith, dignity, and sustained support.
