LOMBARD, IL — The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago is proud to announce the first annual Project HOPE Sunday. On Meatfare Sunday, February 15, parishes across six states will unite to feed the hungry within their local communities.
“What began as a grassroots effort during the 2020 pandemic has blossomed into a thriving Metropolis ministry,” said Yanni Sianis, Chairman of Project HOPE. “Project HOPE Sunday is the next step among many in our evolution to impact the region as Christ’s Church.”
This event marks the first time the Metropolis has organized parishes across the six-state Metropolis for a synchronized philanthropic effort. By establishing this foundation in 2026, the Metropolis aims to grow participation and deepen philanthropic impact in subsequent years.
“On Project HOPE Sunday, we witness the parishes of our Holy Metropolis mobilizing as one Church, the living Body of Christ,” said His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael of Chicago. “When we act together with one heart and one purpose, we transcend silos and boundaries to serve our brothers and sisters as a single, united family in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Building on a long-standing partnership, Project HOPE and the Young Adult League (YAL) will also collaborate to prepare 500 food bags during the YAL Annual Conference. Past joint efforts have distributed over 100,000 meals to vital community centers and food pantries.
How It Works: Following Divine Liturgy on Meatfare Sunday, parishes will package non-perishable food bags for delivery to local shelters and families. Each parish is encouraged to prepare at least 100 bags.
Get Involved: The Metropolis calls on the faithful to lend their talents to this united effort:
- Volunteers: Aid with packaging and distribution.
- Donors: Provide necessary food items.
- Drivers: Support transportation to local shelters.
- Organizers: Help with administration and awareness.
How to Prepare: Parish leaders should begin identifying local shelters and coordinating volunteer teams now. For how-to guides and more information, visit chicago.goarch.org/ministry/hope.
