The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America expresses its profound joy and heartfelt congratulations to Rev. Protopresbyter Dr. Vassilios Bebis upon his reception as a Correspondent Member of the historic “Accademia Tiberina” of Rome, in recognition of his distinguished contributions to Systematic Theology over the past decade in Europe and the United States.

Founded in 1813, the “Accademia Tiberina” is one of Italy’s oldest learned societies, dedicated to promoting scholarship and intercultural dialogue. Among its Greek members have been noted academics such as Konstantinos Spyropoulos, Themistocles Rassias, and Manolis Varvounis, a testament to the enduring presence of Hellenic thought and now, with the recognition of Fr. Vassilios, Orthodox theology within international academic discourse.

Fr. Vassilios Bebis serves as parish priest of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and as Eastern Orthodox Chaplain at Harvard University. He currently holds the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria Meletios Metaxakis Professorship of Eastern Orthodox and Ecumenical Theology and teaches Orthodox and Ecumenical Theology at the Graduate Theological Foundation, an institution in consultative relationship with the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and affiliated with the Centro Pro Unione in Rome.

A lifelong scholar and pastor, Fr. Vassilios earned his B.A. and M.Div. from Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, his S.T.M. from Boston University, and two doctoral degrees: Ph.D. in Church and Dogma History from North-West University/Greenwich School of Theology, and Th.D. in Dogmatics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2020, he also completed a Higher Education Teaching Certificate at Harvard University’s Derek Bok Center.

The Archdiocese recognizes Fr. Vassilios’s remarkable academic achievements and his steadfast dedication to the Church and Her sacred mission in the academic world. His work exemplifies the harmony of faith and reason and brings honor to the clergy of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, whose service extends from the altar to the academy.

“The recognition bestowed upon Father Vassilios by such a distinguished institution highlights the luminous witness of Orthodox theology within the global intellectual community,” His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America said. “We rejoice in clergy like Fr. Vassilios, who embody both the pastoral heart and the scholarly mind for the Church.”
