Meeting under the Presidency of His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America during their regular Spring Session, meeting on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 by teleconference, elevated His Grace Bishop Paul of Chicago to the rank and dignity of Archbishop.
In a letter dated May 28, 2020, the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord, His Eminence Archbishop Michael of New York, Secretary of the Holy Synod announced the decision to diocesan chancellor, Archpriest John Zdinak, “It pleases me to share with you, and through you with all the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of the Midwest, the joyous news that your diocesan hierarch, Bishop Paul, has been elevated to the rank and dignity of ARCHBISHOP, by decision of His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon and the Hierarchs of the Holy Synod of The Orthodox Church in America, effective immediately.
The Elevation was announced by acclimation of the Synod members at the third session of the Spring 2020 Meeting, on Wednesday, May 27, in recognition of Archbishop Paul’s five years of outstanding service as a bishop, leading the Diocese of the Midwest and co-laboring with his brother hierarchs on the Holy Synod.”
His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon offered the following congratulations on twitter today:
