On September 11, 2026, His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon presided at a Panikhida at Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Washington, DC, to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Concelebrating with His Beatitude were Archpriest Alessandro Margheritino, Chancellor of the Orthodox Church in America, Archpriest David Bozeman, Secretary of the Orthodox Church in America, Archpriest Gregory Safchuk, Interim Dean of the Washington Deanery, Archpriest Ted Boback, and Priest John Stiff. During the memorial service, the priests read the names of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93.
At the conclusion of the service, His Beatitude addressed those gathered and read his statement issued for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the attacks.
During his remarks, His Beatitude said, “Throughout our nation and throughout the world, the names of those who perished have been solemnly read in public gatherings. This evening, we also have lifted up those more than 3,000 names, including many Orthodox Christians, in the memorial service that we have just offered. In the Church remembrance is more than recalling the past and so, as the clergy read those names, both silently and out loud, all of us, through prayer, have brought before God those who have fallen asleep, commending them to His mercy and asking that they be forever known and remembered by Him.”
