Washington, D.C. — The Washington Oxi Day Foundation today unveiled a one-minute video revealing distinguished Hellenes whose leadership, generosity, and commitment have, for 15 years, lifted onto today’s stage of world leaders the story of the Greek people’s courageous WWII Oxi Day miracle that led to the defeat of Adolph Hitler. They enable the awarding of an Oxi Day Courage Award each year to a man and a woman who each exhibit today the courage displayed by the Greek people on Oxi Day. They also present each year the Metropolitan Chrysostomos Award to an individual who shows today the courage shown by the Metropolitan’s response to the Nazis’ demand for a list of the Jews on the Greek Island of Zakynthos. He sent the Jews to mountain villages where they were all saved and gave to the Nazis a list of names that included only the Metropolitan’s and the Mayor’s.
The Hellenes who make all this possible are led by the Logothetis Family, George Marcus, John Calamos, the Bouras Foundation, the Vasileos Haseotes Family, Michael Psaros, Dennis Mehiel, Pete and Danialle Karmanos, Bill Matagaras, Dean Metropoulos, Gerry Ranglas, and the Pedas Family.
These Hellenes have made His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, American presidents, prime ministers of various countries, former US Senate Majority Leader and Republican nominee for President Bob Dole, world humanitarian Bono, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, recipient of the Pulitzer Prize Vladimir Kara-Murza, to name a few, aware of the Greek people’s miraculous WWII courage that led to Hitler’s defeat.
We are proud of the fact that three times in recent years the preeminent Nobel Prize process selected Oxi Day Foundation Award winners for their prestigious prize. As well, another Oxi Day Award winner was selected by a US president to be presented to a Joint Meeting of the US Senate and House of Representatives at the President’s State of the Union Address.
Each year many of these Hellenes celebrate at a Washington DC black-tie dinner with national and world leaders, a man and a woman who each receive an Oxi Day Award and a Metropolitan Chrysostomos Award for those who today show the courage that was shown by the Greeks in WWII. As a result of 15 years of Awards being given to extraordinarily courageous people around the world, news of these winners coupled with the Oxi Day story have reached into 22 home-countries of award winners with media coverage in each country carrying the message to tens of thousands.
As anticipation builds for the 2026 Oxi Day Awards, the Foundation invites organizations, media outlets, and community leaders to share the video (link above) to deepen engagement among government leaders, philanthropists, media, and the global Greek diaspora, amplifying the mission and honoring the Hellenes whose leadership sustains it. Credit for the preservation and spread of this WWII Oxi Day courage story must also be given to media outlets and reporters who, for example, carry information in this videotape to your attention. They are essential to the extraordinary success of this historically significant undertaking.
