This week, on May 16, the Department of Communications and Orthodox Observer’s Ben Malian graduated with highest distinction from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology’s Master of Theological Studies program.

At Holy Cross, Ben’s research focused on the neo-patristic methodology of Fr. Georges Florovsky as adopted by Florovsky’s most creative student, Metropolitan John Zizioulas, in elaborating the existential implications of Church dogma. He plans to continue this research in his doctoral studies at Boston College in Systematic Theology through a critical comparison of patristic reception in Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic theology of the 20th Century.

Since 2025, Ben has also worked for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America’s Department of Communications, providing the department with research and written contributions–including coverage of the 2025 joint Orthodox-Catholic pilgrimage “From Rome to New Rome” and the 2025 Apostolic Visit of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, as well as our 2026 media initiative America at 250: Orthodoxy in a New Homeland.

The Orthodox Observer team offers our warmest congratulations to Ben. We are overjoyed at his success, and look forward to his continued, valued contributions to academia and our department. Axios!
