Orthodoxy for Kids, a newly-established nonprofit organization, is pleased to announce the launch of Sophia, an animated series created to provide engaging, web-based Orthodox Christian education for young children ages 3-6. Founded in response to the need for high-quality religious education in a digital age, Orthodoxy for Kids is guided by its motto, “Learning Orthodoxy Can Be Fun,” developing joyful, loving, and non-judgmental animated content, to supplement—not replace—parish-based religious education, reinforcing what children learn in church and Sunday School.
The Sophia series is a cornerstone of this mission. Created for young families—particularly those navigating mixed-faith households, busy work schedules, and modern secular pressures—the series provides practical tools for fostering faith at home in a way they can easily understand, absorb and remember. Parents of children with disabilities may also find Sophia to be a particularly useful faith-based resource.
Sophia introduces children to the richness and beauty of Orthodox Christianity through prayers, hymns, feast days, sacraments, monastic life, and the everyday rhythm of the Church. By blending authentic Orthodox tradition with the creativity and accessibility of modern animation, Orthodoxy for Kids seeks to instill a lasting curiosity, reverence, and love for God—ensuring the next generation grows up connected to the Orthodox faith, its community, and the joy of living in Christ.
Sophia was developed specifically with a special focus on Greek Orthodox religious programming for the Church’s youngest members. It has become increasingly clear that traditional methods of religious education are not effectively reaching this age group. Young children today are overwhelmingly visual learners and are deeply connected to phones and tablets as primary sources of information. Recognizing this reality, Orthodoxy for Kids seeks to meet children where they are—by offering meaningful, visually engaging content firmly grounded in authentic Orthodox teaching. Sophia provides a welcoming, familiar, and enjoyable animated entry point into the faith, gently introducing Orthodoxy in a way young children can understand and embrace.
“When Sophia was introduced to our children at The Cathedral School this past December, she was immediately received with excitement and warmth. Sophia offers a gentle and engaging introduction to the life of the Orthodox Church for young children and families,” said the V. Rev. Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne Chrysostomos Gilbert. “Through her character, a joyful young Orthodox girl, Sophia becomes a familiar and relatable guide for our students helping plant the seeds of faith. At a time when many families are seeking wholesome Orthodox resources to support catechesis and parish life, this initiative invites children to learn, play, and grow closer to Christ with simplicity, wonder, and joy.”
This initiative represents a vital opportunity to gather and nurture the faithful at a young age—planting seeds of faith that, by God’s grace, will bear fruit for a lifetime.
