Introduction:

This is the last installment in our series journeying through chapters of Fr. Thomas Hopko’s podcast, The Names of Jesus. This study deepens our understanding of the various titles and attributes of Jesus, enhancing our spiritual growth and theological insight.

Aligned with this year’s OCF theme, “Jesus, The King of All”, our discussion today will center on the chapter titled Jesus the Resurrection. The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of our faith, demonstrating His victory over death and offering us eternal life. In this chapter, Fr. Thomas explores the significance of Christ as the Resurrection, drawing from both the New and Old Testaments. We invite you to listen to the podcast episode here and discuss with your chapter.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. What does it mean when Jesus says in John 11:25, “I am the resurrection and the life”? How does this statement shape our understanding of eternal life?
  2. How does Fr. Thomas explain the connection between Jesus as the Resurrection and the Orthodox Church’s celebration of Pascha? What hymns or prayers from the Paschal service reflect this title?
  3. Why is Christ’s resurrection different from other resurrections in the Bible, such as those of Lazarus or Jairus’ daughter? What makes His resurrection unique and transformative?
  4. How does St. Paul describe the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15, and why is it central to the Christian faith? How does this passage impact our understanding of life, death, and salvation?

Bonus!
Have everyone in your chapter meeting bring out their Orthodox Study Bibles and search for different Gospel accounts of the resurrection. Then, assign each person a passage to read aloud (Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20-21). Compare the accounts and discuss: What are the similarities and differences? How do the unique perspectives of each Gospel contribute to our understanding of Jesus as the Resurrection? End by reflecting on how Christ’s resurrection gives us hope in our daily lives.
