Introduction:
This is the sixth installment in our series journeying through episodes of Fr. Thomas Hopko’s podcast, The Names of Jesus. This study will deepen our understanding of the various titles and attributes of Jesus, enhancing our spiritual growth and theological insight.
Aligned with this year’s OCF theme, “Jesus, the King of All,” our discussion today will center on the episode titled “Jesus, the Suffering Servant.” We invite you to listen to the full podcast episode here. This discussion will focus on the first 20 minutes and 15 seconds of the episode.
Questions for Discussion:
- In what ways do our experiences lead us to believe that punishment is the appropriate response to sin?
- According to the Church’s reading of the Scripture, what is God’s response to our unrighteousness and how does it differ from the “justice” we might think is required?
- In your own words, how would you describe the mystery of Christ suffering for our sakes?
- What does it practically look like for us to “be made righteous through faith and grace in Jesus”?
- What else stood out to you in what Fr. Hopko shared in this portion of the podcast?
Closing Prayer
From the hymns of Holy Thursday:
Today, He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung on the tree.
The King of Angels is decked with a crown of thorns.
He who wraps the heavens in clouds if wrapped in the purple of mockery.
He who freed Adam in the Jordan is slapped on the face.
The Bridegroom of the Church is affixed to the cross with nails.
The Son of the Virgin is pierced by a spear.
We worship Your Passion, O Christ. (x3)
Show us also Your glorious Resurrection.
