On January 9, 2025, His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon joined civic and religious leaders at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC to honor the late President James Earl Carter, Jr.
The 39th President of the United States of America passed away on December 29, 2024 at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia and was the longest-living President in U.S. history.
His Beatitude participated in the procession and was seated in the sanctuary alongside other religious leaders. Also attending with Metropolitan Tikhon was Archpriest Alessandro Margheritino, Acting Chancellor and Secretary of the Orthodox Church in America.
The late president’s body was received with a ceremony at the cathedral at around 10:00 AM, followed by the commencement of the funeral service and several tributes among which one offered by the current president, President Joseph R. Biden.
