Hellenic College sophomore Moriah Moody volunteers weekly at Open Door, a soup kitchen based at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Allston, Massachusetts, that has been feeding the poor and homeless every Monday night since 1988. Moriah says, “As a volunteer, I do small tasks such as serve meals, occasionally prepare meals, and clean up at the end.” But she emphasizes that “Open Door is more than a soup kitchen—it is a community of service and love. Throughout the evening the staff gives their all to the guests. It is an inspiring environment that makes my soul sing. Every Monday evening is a new blessing. I have never walked away without being filled with love and care.”
Open Door is one of a number of local organizations where students in Hellenic College’s Community Engagement course can fulfill both the requirement to perform volunteer service and Christ’s command to love our neighbors as ourselves.
